CHATTERTON YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

OBJECTIVE

To recognize outstanding achievement of young investigators in the field of discharges and electrical insulation in vacuum and to encourage young scientists and engineers to enter this field.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for the Chatterton award, the candidate must be under the age of 38 as of the closing date of the symposium; Present a paper at the ISDEIV, in which he or she is either the sole author, or the first author of a multi-author paper (submission of a single-author paper is strongly encouraged)
Be affiliated with an academic, government, or other non-profit institution.

METHOD OF SELECTION

  • Authors who apply for the Chatterton Award have to indicate their intention in the Author Information Form to the ISDEIV 2012 (see Manuscript submission chapter of the ISDEIV 2012 web side)
  • Candidates are required to submit a written paper to be included in the Symposium Proceedings and to present their work as a poster during a special poster session.
  • At the first day of the Symposium, the LOC will organize a special Chatterton Award Poster Session in which all candidates are required to present their work.
  • Selection of the Awardee will be based on the quality of the work presented. This includes quality of the written paper, the poster, and proof of knowledge at the poster board.
  • The Awards Committee, a subcommittee of PISC, will nominate a candidate and make a recommendation to PISC. PISC will make a final decision.

AWARD

  • The award will consist of a plaque or certificate and a cash award. The amount of the cash award, determined by the sponsor, is 1000 USD.
  • The award will be presented at the Symposium banquet or a similar suitable occasion.
  • The awardee will be prominently mentioned in the Proceedings of the following Symposium, as done on Proceedings of the previous and this Symposium.

FUNDING

For the ISDEIV 2012 funding of the Chatterton award will be also provided by ABB AG.

DYKE AWARD 2012

The Dyke Award was established in 1988 by the Permanent International Scientific Committee of ISDEIV to recognize an individual contributor to the science or application of electrical discharges or electrical insulation in vacuum for a body of significant contributions.

Any worker in the field may nominate a candidate. The nomination should be in the form of a letter to the Chair of the Awards Committee, prof. R.P.P. Smeets ( rene.smeets@kema.com ), detailing the contribution of the candidate and its significance.

The Dyke Award 2012 will be presented during the XXVth ISDEIV in Tomsk, Russia.

Deadline for nomination is October 1, 2011.

The ISDEIV BEST PAPER AWARD - Japan Prize

OBJECTIVE

The "ISDEIV Best Paper Award - Japan Prize" is given in recognition of the most significant contribution of the past Symposium of ISDEIV. Significance will be judged by scientific or technological novelty and the likely impact on the fields of electrical discharges and electrical insulation in vacuum. Special attention will be paid to innovative ideas and breakthrough findings. One "ISDEIV Best Paper Award - Japan Prize" will be given at each symposium to an individual or a team of authors.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Formal requirements
    The contributions must be
    • presented at the symposium and
    • included in the Proceedings of the symposium in award-worthy quality.
    • An altered and expanded version of the symposium contribution is required to be accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal as determined by PISC.
  • Nomination and review; eligibility
One contribution and one alternate will be nominated by the Awards Committee, a subcommittee of PISC. The Awards Committee will consult with the IEEE Guest Editors and PISC members. PISC members or Award Committee members who are nominated are excluded from any further discussions of the nomination and selection process.
  • Recommendation
The nominated contribution and the possible alternate will be recommended by the Award Committee to PISC for final confirmation and approval.
  • Selection
The PISC will make the final determination at its "interim meeting" (via e-mail or phone conference) between the Symposia. The Chair and Secretary of PISC are responsible for the organizing this meeting.

AWARD CONTENTS AND PRESENTATIONS

The Award will consist of
  • a plaque,
  • a monetary (cash) award of 2500 USD,
  • limited travel support.
The cash award and the travel support must be consistent with the available designated funds as determined by the PISC treasurer. The PISC treasurer will give an appropriate recommendation to PISC about the amount of the award and he is responsible for providing the check at the Award Ceremony. If the Award is given to team of authors, the Award will be shared among the authors. Travel support will be given to the main author who is the designated Recipient to receive the Award at the next Award Ceremony on behalf of all authors. The amount of the travel support will take into account the need of the Recipient. The award committee will be responsible for the preparation of the plaque in coordination with the LOC. The Award will be presented at the (next) Symposium at a time determined by the LOC, preferably at the symposium banquet, by the PISC Chair and a designated representative of Japan, the sponsoring body. The Recipient will be invited to give either a historical or a scientific talk during the symposium, in coordination with LOC program arrangements. The limited travel support is designed to assist the Recipient to travel to the symposium at which the award will be given.

NOTIFICATION AND INVITATION

The PISC Chairperson, or another PISC member designated by him or her, will contact the designated Recipient to notify him or her, explain the significance of the award and the expectation to be present for the award ceremony, and to obtain his or her acceptance. After the Recipient has accepted, the PISC Chairperson will notify the LOC Chairperson, who will coordinate details of timing of the award ceremony, plaque production, etc.
